According to the annual report released by the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) for 2014, the mining sector index in Morocco improved by 3.4 per cent.
The mining sector showed a favorable trend in Morocco in late 2014 compared in the year 2013. The change in the trend reflects the improvement of 2.4% recorded in the first quarter, and posted 6.4% and 6.1 % respectively in the second and third quarter.
In general, this good performance is due to the strengthening of the production of rock phosphate, which increased in volume by 3.6% at the end of December 2014.
Last year saw the mineral explorations done in the most promising areas of the country. Sixteen exploration objectives focused on precious metals, 18 explorations for base metals and energy substances while 6 targets were explored in search for rocks and industrial minerals. The last two focused on mining research.
According to ONHYM, three memoranda of understanding, five amendments, an assignment and a framework cooperation agreement were signed last year. The agency has also signed cooperation agreements with various African countries such as Senegal, Conakry, Mali, Guinea, Gabon, and Tunisia.
