A committee under the UAE’s Federal Traffic Council is deliberating regarding the implementation of a statutory law to limit or control excess weight carried by highway trucks.
A conference was held to talk about a regulatory agenda to watch over the weight being handled by trucks running on the country’s roads, the law is being considered to encourage safety, prevent traffic interference and protect infrastructure according to authorities as trucks loaded with so much weight can damage the road infrastructure and can be troublesome when involved in accidents.
Even though there are Gulf Standardization Organization (GSO) guidelines pertaining vehicle weights, some owners and operators in the Emirates keep on filling up trucks more than the recommended scale set out by manufacturers. The new legislation will allow authorities to restrain this habit as stated by the Monitoring and Enforcement Director of the roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) Licensing Agency. .
As part of the regulation, smart devices would be installed across the fleets of truck and bus operators. The telematics systems would report any violations directly to RTA’s Licensing Agency, and therefore decrease the number of overloaded heavy vehicles and such cases involving these vehicles on highways of UAE.
