The Dubai Metro will be expanded by 15 kilometres, with seven new stations leading to the location of Expo 2020 and 4km of underground rail.

Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, was approved the Route 2020 project for the Metro Red Line and directed that the construction will begin right away.

Sheikh Mohammed stated that the project must be completed in time to accommodate for the enlarged number of commuters anticipated for Expo 2020, which will take place in the territory for the first time.

The total length of the Dubai Metro, red and green lines, will be improved to 90km. Two of the seven new stations, from Nakheel Harbour and Tower Metro to the Expo location, will be underground.

The structure of Route 2020 project corresponds to the tactical idea of the Dubai Government for accomplishing sustainable development and enhancing a world-class infrastructure and services, according to the chairman and executive director of the Roads and Transport Authority, Mattar Al Tayer.

It also comes as implementation of RTA’s master plan for providing multiple options of integrated mass transit comprising the Metro, tram, buses and water transport towards fulfilling RTA’s idea of secure and smooth transport for everyone.

The RTA has charted out an incorporated design for roads and transport projects to cater  Expo emphasized by Route 2020 project. Mr Al Tayer averred the proposal was for a sustainable project to provide the city throughout and after Expo 2020.

It also caters the biggest possible number of residents with present and upcoming projects, easing snarls on some jam-packed roads, giving top-class service to aimed communities and integrating with public transit systems and the roads network in the emirate.

Route 2020 will cater the Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estates, and Dubai Investments Park, which are home to approximately 240,000 people.

It will take 16 minutes ride from Dubai Marina to the place of Expo. RTA was due to hold a workshop this month for consultants and contractors focused in rail projects, to display parts of the Route 2020 project.

The project is approximated to be released for tenders in July.
