The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded the Dh404 million road development project for the Airport Road in line with its roads improvement plan to alleviate traffic congestion in the neighborhood of Dubai International Airport.
The completion of the Airport Road upgrading project by 2017 will help in facilitating the expected increase in the number of travelers through Dubai International Airport, which is expected to accommodate around 92 million passengers by 2020.
The scope of the project includes the construction of bridges, tunnels at Al Rashidiya and Airport Road junction as well as in Nad Al Hamar Road, Casablanca Road, Marrakech Road. Furthermore, there will be improvements of intersections, and constructing of three lane roads in each direction to split the traffic passage from and to Nad Al Hamar from the vehicular course on Airport Road starting from Al Rashidiya crossing point up to Marrakech Interchange.
With the project, Airport Road’s capacity will be increased by an additional 5,000 vehicles per hour. The traffic safety level will be improved, and the travel time from Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road to Casablanca Road will be shorten from 30 minutes to 5 minutes.
The Al Rashidiya Interchange will benefit on a new three lanes bridge on Airport Road which will lessen the waiting time at the said interchange. On the other hand, the Airport Road — Nad Al Hamar Road Interchange upgrade entails the construction of an additional two way, two lanes bridge to aid on the traffic coming from Nad Al Hamar Road towards Airport Road.
Furthermore, the Marrakech Road — Airport Road Interchange will get a three lane flyover on Airport Road together with a ramp from the bridge in the direction of Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport getting around the traffic signal. In addition, the improvement in Airport Road — Casablanca Road Interchange includes the construction of an extra single-lane bridge dedicated for the traffic from Airport Road through the Casablanca Road without waiting at the traffic signal. A construction of another street for traffic coming from Al Garhoud will give access to Terminal 1 and 3 of Dubai International Airport, in addition to the extra one lane on the Casablanca Road.
