The Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company, Masdar has completed installing 9,000 from the 17,670 solar home systems all over 940 villages in rural Morocco.
The project is being executed by the UAE Company in cooperation with Morocco’s Office National de l’Electricité et de l’Eau Potable (ONEE).
Masdar’s Special Projects unit handles the design, delivery, installation and implementation of the solar energy project in Morocco. In conjunction with the other projects, the completion of the project will provide the communities in rural Morocco easy access to electricity by the end of 2017.
The project connects the rural zones in Morocco to the national energy grid. The system consists of 290-watt solar panels and batteries with sufficient storage space for solar energy which lasts for three days, consequently ensuring constant power supply to the said areas. Additionally, the systems are equipped with energy-efficient utilities such as LED lamps and a 165-liter refrigerator.
The CEO of Masdar confirmed that they are very confident with Morocco’s experience and track record as a renewable energy market and its exceptional efforts in providing electricity to its rural areas.
The project highlights the Global Goal of providing ecological energy for all and is a new notable achievement for Morocco in preparation for the COP22 which it will host at the end of this year.
The project is expected to be fully accomplished by the second half of 2016.
