Morocco and Portugal are set to launch the technical and economic study of their electrical interconnection project with a capacity of 1,000 MW.
This is a major advantage for the strengthening of Morocco’s integration into the regional energy system. It should be noted that the Morocco-Portugal interconnection project was the focus of discussions by policy makers in both countries for some years. It was reinforced during the twelfth meeting of high-level officials in April 2015 and which was completed by the signing of 11 cooperation agreements covering various strategic areas, including energy.
The cooperation procedure on energy has been implemented during the first conference in Rabat attended by the joint working group to study the opportunities for energy cooperation and carrying out of associated projects including infrastructure.
At the culmination of the meeting, the parties from the energy departments of the two countries as well as representatives of the National Office of Electricity and drinking water (ONEE), had adopted a plan for the realization of a feasibility study of the electrical interconnection.
Morocco’s participation in the system of regional energy project delivers a satisfactory charter for the development of electricity trade as well as the integration of networks and markets.
