The President and CEO of the United Nations Foundation and the CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF voiced out their support for a Congressional Action on Girls Count Act which underlines the programs to enhance birth registration for girls and boys, and uphold guidelines that avoid prejudice against girls particularly in developing countries.
Aside from UN and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Girls Count Act also receives support from other organizations like the Alliance to End Slavery and Trafficking, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic Relief Services, and World Vision. The bill is scheduled for approval.
According to the President and CEO of the United Nations Foundation, the Girls Count Act will give importance to girls and it will give them the right and opportunity to reach their full potential. The campaign will stress the significance for the girls to be fully documented and registered.
Furthermore, birth registration is a crucial human right that shields children from harm and exploitation as births of almost 230 million boys and girls under five have never been recorded putting their education, health and freedom in jeopardy. The Girls Count Act will see to it that the government makes birth registration a main concern in its development programs.
