Al Wasl Plaza will become an open area that brings together modern design, advanced technology systems and a complex domed trellis that includes a large immersive projection experience.
According to news, the site will be situated at the center of the immense 4.38 square kilometer venue of Expo 2020.
The plaza will be put up together with other facilities like themed pavilions. Construction is set to begin in the coming months and expected to be finished by the last quarter of 2019.
With an area of about 150 meters in diameter, Al Wasl will function as a central hub throughout the Expo 2020 event, bringing together a diverse group of people to “Connect Minds”, a main goal of the very first World Expo happening in the Middle East, Africa & South Asia region.
Throughout its 7 entrances & exits, the site will connect 3 thematic districts called Opportunity, Sustainability and Mobility, and also other key concourses consisting of Dubai Metro link & the UAE Pavilion.
The design space was created by the Expo 2020 team together with Adrian Smith _ Gordon Gill Architecture after the company won the contract surpassing some of the bigger names in the industry.
A 65-meter-tall domed trellis will give coverage to the plaza. The design, inspired by the event’s logo will function as an immersive 360° projection surface.
Due to the dome’s transparency, the projection will be seen inside and out. The site will have fountains, restaurants, and parks.
The Minister of State for Int’l. Cooperation and Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau’s Dir. Gen. stated that memorable moments are framed by memorable spaces. He sees the plaza to be a site of inspiration, representing the Arab culture & family values whilst looking to the future. More so, it’s the last key design element to be finalized. A lot of people are looking forward to watching how the plaza develops together with the other structures created for Expo 2020 Dubai.
The plaza’s design utilizes techniques to regulate the temperature underneath the trellis to ensure a comfortable surrounding.
Gordon Gill of AS+GG stated that Al Wasl Plaza represents the vision of the much-anticipated Expo 2020 Dubai being a stunning global destination. The company is building a space, with a revolutionary design, aimed to become an architectural landmark not only for 6 months but long into the future. It hopes that Al Wasl Plaza will inspire the upcoming generation.
Al Wasl will be the home for the expo’s events and even after the event concludes come 2021. It will be a center for development with proposals to transform the neighboring buildings into hotels and commercial spaces to complement the venue of the Expo 2020.
Expo 2020 Dubai will welcome guests on October 20, 2020, until April 10, 2021.
