Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum envisions Dubai to transform into the smartest city in the world. Launched in 2015, the Electric Vehicle initiative is part of DEWA’s three groundbreaking programmes to encourage sustainable development in the United Arab Emirates.

In accordance with Dubai Government’s Smart City initiative, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, ENOC’s vice chairman and DEWA’s managing director and CEO said that the project will make a strong statement that the government is serious in promoting the use of electric cars.

The program uses photovoltaic technology to power 3 different charging stations so it could accommodate all kinds of electric vehicles. Charging time takes from 30 minutes to eight hours. ENOC provided the facilities in establishing the infrastructure needed to facilitate the implementation.

During the first phase of the development of the project, DEWA planned to install 100 charging stations in Dubai. Today 16 charging stations have already been installed. More of these Green Chargers can be expected as DEWA already collaborated with Dubai Airports, Dubai Municipality, Road and Transportation Authority, shopping malls, petrol stations, hotels and car parks.

DEWA has used photovoltaic technology to power three different categories of charging stations, which are designed to accommodate all kinds of electric vehicles.

To use the facility, drivers of electric vehicles need to secure a green card charger by registering and setting up an account with DEWA.

A renewable energy alternative such as this is an effective way to lessen our country’s carbon footprint. We commend the UAE government for this Green Energy Program and urge the public to share and support this initiative.
