The Khalifa Port Container Terminal in Abu Dhabi is all set to enter the next stage of expansion with new equipment to be installed in 2016 and 2017 to accommodate the demand for services according to its operator.
At present, the port in the capital is at 78% of its handling capacity and in just two years its infrastructures will be developed to improve its operations and to cater to the expected growth of the local and regional industry.
According to the forecast, 1.48 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) containers have been taken care of at Khalifa Port Container Terminal in 2015, compared from 1.14 million last year. A growth of 10% with the port operator is expected by handling 1.62 million TEU containers in 2016.
The first phase of the expansion of the Container Terminal will reach its maximum capacity in 2020 and consequently the second part will further increase this capacity to 5 million TEUs annually.
Khalifa Port Container Terminal is now considered as a key logistics hub and a commercial, fast and reliable option to regional ports. Its network is developing significantly, adding destinations from five to 50 intercontinental destinations.
Through this project, the port operator stands to its initiative to innovate and continue its growth drive through to 2020 when the next phase of the port island will be ready for operation.
