The awards on its 14th year were chosen by a board of judges composing of architecture experts all over the world. The jury selected from nominated buildings towering at 100 meters and which are completed in the last year. They made the decision according to the structure’s aesthetic and functional design.
The project required seven years to construct and was opened on June last year. It is said that Cayan Tower’s design help to reduce wind pressure being received by the tower and directs the wind so that its forces are incapable of managing themselves. Judges admired its helix shape making the floors rotated by 1.2 degrees to arrive with the total 90-degree twist.
London’s The Shard took the number one spot for its complicated design in a particularly tight site, thus requiring an inventive planning. The skyscraper was recognized and considered London’s new symbol.
Tower 1 in Vienna, Austria, took second place. It was commended for the design of its façade which is treated in a contrasting way described in details by three mirror-smooth sides which are broken by a craggy, jagged fourth that gives the building power of expression and impression of solidity even though it has a slim shape.
