With joint efforts of an American aerospace company, Etihad Airways, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s (Takreer), the Masdar Insitute and Total, the project to develop biofuel in the UAE capital is on track and nearing testing stage.
The project’s goal is to produce environmentally friendly aviation jet fuel in Abu Dhabi. In line with this initiative is the construction of a biofuel producing plant on a one-acre trial farm located in Abu Dhabi. The plant is seeing completion after three to four months.
Furthermore, a halophyte plant called salicornia bigelovii that produces oil that can be used to make the biofuel, is planned to be added in the test farm.
According to a report, a small initial project will be launched after the test farm is fully ready. It will take one year to 18 months to start a series of harvest rotations and observe what the opportunities are and the possibilities of increasing that up.
