Headed by the Nepal Red Cross and with the help of American Red Cross, the Red Cross divisions from different countries all over the world have managed to raise funds and get an international response to bring assistance to people in Nepal.

On the record, approximately eight million people’s lives have been seriously affected by the quake last April. Over three million is said to need people food assistance.

Due to the trauma that the quake has left, many people are now apprehensive to return to their homes because there is no assurance that they are safe and stable enough to live in. There is no choice but to go on sleeping in the open, in cold and wet conditions. For the moment, around 37,500 people are currently staying in camps in the Kathmandu Valley. Sending reliefs to some areas in Nepal is still a test and people in these areas urgently need food, water, healthcare, sanitation and hygiene, and shelter.

The Red Cross team from Nepal has reached most the affected areas bringing in meals and rice, hygiene kits , shelter equipments, blankets, and health care supplies. More than 4,000 first aid volunteers have been sent and over 28,000 tarps have been installed. Two thousand sets of relief supplies and about 242 million water purification tablets have already been circulated.

The American Red Cross has distributed relief goods and has authorized ten disaster specialists to support the relief operation. Nine of these specialists were stationed in Nepal to facilitate cash transfer programming, IT/telecoms, emergency relief, information management, and recovery preparation. The one was assigned in Geneva to help with global Red Cross efforts online.

The Red Cross division in America has also set up information management assistance and remote mapping with almost 4,500 volunteers are helping to mapping Nepal.
