An official declaration from the Chairman of Abu Dhabi International Airport marked the re-opening of the newly renovated southern runway simultaneously when an Airbus A380 aeroplane took off and landed the runway.
The Southern Airfield runway rehabilitation worth $99 million was awarded in April 2013. In order to accommodate the world’s largest aeroplanes, the improvement in the facilities entailed the refurbishment and widening of the Southern Runway. The General Civil Aviation Authority of the UAE had officially entitled operational certification for the Southern Runway to Abu Dhabi Airports on the 23rd of December.
The runways will make Abu Dhabi International Airport one of the biggest two-runway operations in the world for its aggregate capacity of more than 500,000 aircraft per year.
Furthermore, aside from the runway renovation, the Southern Airfield Program also includes the construction of an airside tunnel measuring more than 1.2 kilometers long which will link the existing Terminals 1 and 2 to the Midfield Terminal Complex which construction is still on progress.
After the completion of the MTC, it is expected that the new works will boost the capacity to over 45 million passengers a year.
