In line with Casablanca’s cultural policy and for the improvement of tourism in the city, the Sacred Heart Church will be the subject of a reconstruction project to make it a stable cultural center.
The church has a large garden area that is suitable in planning and organizing outdoor cultural activities. The rehabilitation program comprises the redevelopment of the Arab League Park and the upgrade of the other several buildings which surround the garden like the Casablancaise and Cupola.
Technical studies for the project will be launched in September, in order to go along with the programming works as well as the budgets and delivery. The construction work is expected to commence at the end of the year in order to preserve the church which is considered as one of the most significant elements of the architectural heritage of Casablanca while its conversion into a multipurpose cultural space will promote the culture and art that the city can offer and share.
The building is boasting a large area of 1,500 square meters, presenting several possibilities for internal layout, accommodating different exhibition spaces and cultural activities. Its location is also strategically planned due to its proximity to the park of the Arab League as well as the city center.
Furthermore, the high ceilings and special lighting fixed through stained glass windows on the walls of the church will integrate new plates and serve to increase the area of exhibition spaces. This intervention will focus on the entire site and will be applied as a first step regarding the restoration and consolidation of the church and its annexes which includes the recovery of concrete, sealing and so on. The project also aims the conversion of the church and its neighboring buildings into a cultural space that will accommodate several artistic activities.
Nothing is decided yet regarding the financial aspects of the project since it is dependent on the final program which is to be defined soon.
