The idea for the exhibition called the Birth of a Museum is not only to present the national collection of Louvre Abu Dhabi to the French public but also to display the commitment of the UAE capital in collecting great works of art for a permanent public collection, according to a representative from Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The event was hosted by the leader of Fance, President Francois Hollande and the chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority also commonly referred to as TCA, Sheik Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan.
The exhibit is being held at Hall Napoleon at the request of The Louvre’s president and director. It features Piet Mondrian’s 1922 Composition with Blue, Red, Yellow and Black which is the museum’s first purchase. Over 160 masterpieces acquired since 2009 are also displayed.
Among the display for the first time is the never been seen artwork in Abu Dhabi, The Pugilists Creugas and Damoxenos by the Venetian neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova. Artworks from around the world will be featured with the aim of bridging the gap between western and eastern art.
The construction of the planned museum was announced in Paris on March 7, 2007 and is expected to be completed by 2015. It is located on the cultural district of Saadiyat Island.
