A conference headed by Ministry of Equipment Transportation and Logistics was held on July 2 highlighting the deliberation of the opportunity of putting up a new airport in Marrakech.
According to the department head, an outlay of 4.3 billion Moroccan dirham or $520 million will be involved for the construction of the planned airport. With the allocated budget and having a space that could accommodate 10 million passengers each year, the upcoming Marrakech airport will deliver solution to the present challenges and difficulties of the current city airport, whose development is hampered by escalating urbanization.
Local public figures also took part in the meeting, in which a choice of prospective sites for the airport was also taken into consideration. It was agreed that he project should be constructed within 30 kilometers of the city.
Even though the capacity of the current airport was augmented up to 9 million passengers per year brought by reconstruction and expansion, it will not withstand to take in the rising traffic, which is predicted to jump to 14.37 million passengers in 2030.
The vicinity of Sidi Zouine and Sidi Bouatmane were discussed as possible sites for the creation of the new airport.
