To catch red light beaters, Abu Dhabi is preparing to mount 150 infrared cameras at all150 Red Light Cameras To Install On Abu Dhabi Roads intersections around the emirates.
Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate announced that motorists who jump on red lights, over speeders, line crossers, illegally parks on pedestrian crossings, unlawfully overtaking other vehicles or making u-turn on the wrong lane can be pinch by these traffic cameras with infrared technology without even flashing.
“The intersection surveillance system has been implemented in the emirate of Abu Dhabi since 2012 and is considered a comprehensive project which aims to enhance road safety. Under this five-year scheme cameras are being installed at 150 intersections in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region,” Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrol Directorate explained.
The department said that 150 light-controlled junctions will be built with surveillance cameras in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region within the next five years, with 40 already in place as part of phase one.
“The traffic control cameras at intersections are high quality thermal infrared cameras covering more than five lanes in each direction. They are multifunctional, and include infrared license plate readers, they are used to determine the numbers and types of crossing vehicles, estimating the average speed, and determining the number and directions of pedestrians during the green and red lights,” the office added.
